'...I love an aria to be as accurately tailored to a singer as a well-made dress', wrote Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - and in this respect his friend and colleague Joseph Haydn was also an excellent master tailor. From 1776 onwards, the musical court of Prince Nicholas I, the 'lover of splendour', included an ongoing programme of opera, which in his position as Kapellmeister was overseen by Haydn. This included not only selecting, rehearsing, and performing works, but also tailoring them to Esterházy proportions, including substituting and recomposing certain arias. This gala concert, featuring overtures and opera arias, as well as instrumental music of the classical era, brings the grandeur of that era to life: with interludes composed for the works of famous contemporaries such as Antonio Salieri and Domenico Cimarosa, a symphony by Haydn’s friend Paul Wranitzky, composed for the 1792 coronation in Frankfurt of the Habsburg Franz II as the (last) Holy Roman Emperor, as well as excerpts from Mozart's 'The Marriage of Figaro' and the 'Magic Flute'.
